Scout Moor 132/33kV BSP Substation– Wind Farm Connection.
Client: United Utilities
Location: Wind Farm Development near to Rochdale, Lancashire.
Who:
Power Technology Solutions, as part of a three-year framework agreement with United Utilities, was awarded the role of main electrical contractor for this project. Several PTS teams were involved, including an experienced Project Manager to ensure the timely delivery of the new 132/33kV Bulk Supply Point (BSP) Substation. PTS were also involved in Design, Construction, and Commissioning work, and held the important CDM role of Principal Contractor on site.

What:
Scout Moor is a new Wind Farm development situated in the moors above Rochdale, Lancashire. Peel Holdings plc have created one of the largest on-shore developments in the country with 26 wind turbines, capable of generating 2.5MW each or 65MW in total; enough to power the needs of 40,000 homes. Power Technology Solutions, with prior experience of working on Wind Farm connections, was involved in the design, the build of the substation and its high level structures, and testing the Primary Plant. This BSP Substation was required to harness the power generated by the turbines and feed it onto the North West Electricity Grid at 132kV.
Wind Farm Connections:
A Wind Farm is a group of wind turbines in the same location used for the production of electric power, with production dependent on the strength of the wind. Individual turbines are interconnected with a medium voltage (usually 33kV) collection system, this voltage is then stepped up with a Transformer to the grid.
Wind Farms, both off-shore and on-shore, are being built to help meet the British Governments goal of achieving 10% of domestic energy consumption being generated from renewable sources by the year 2010.

How:
Power Technology Solutions has an experienced, in-house, Design team that assisted United Utilities in the Control and Protection design of the proposed Substation to service the Wind Farm development. This involved a review of the Protection and Control Schematics and all drawings associated with the Plant and Switchgear; to enable all interfacing to be completed. PTS also issued a full Construction set of drawings, including Circuit Diagrams, Wiring Diagrams, Cable Schedules, and Arrangements.
Once the design and layout had been finalised the construction phase of the project commenced, PTS was installed as the Main Electrical Contractor and Principal Contractor on site, and oversaw the construction, utilising Primary Plant supplied by United Utilities, which included the Transformer, High Level Structures, Disconnectors, and Busbars; PTS also provided the multicore cabling on site.
The Commissioning of the new Substation was performed by a United Utilities team, however the PTS Commissioning team worked closely with them and carried out all Primary Plant testing prior to handover.

Result:
The project was delivered to the satisfaction of the client on-time, on-budget, and complying with all relevant Health & Safety and Quality documentation, even with tight deadlines being imposed on the project. Scout Moor 132/33kV BSP Substation was the first undertaking under the framework agreement and further enhances Power Technology Solutions' position in the High Voltage electrical Power Industry as having the right leadership, experience, expertise, and manpower to successfully complete multi-disapline projects, such as this.
PTS has the experience, expertise, and systems in place to deliver.
